Digging Beets

I finally remembered to take my camera out to the field.  I took lots and lots of pictures to make up for all of the ones I haven't taken this harvest, I wonder if that will really work?  I know Ryan will be happy with me if I just have some farming pictures on the blog, this is our life after all, I can hear him say….

Ryan and Bobby are both in diggers with 15 trucks, you think they could roll through the acres, and they have been doing about a pivot in a day and a half.  Now they have a long 10 mile haul and the lines at the beet dump are super long so they spend a lot of time waiting for trucks.  The last two fields are taking more time then the rest of the harvest has!  Hopefully we will finish things up this week….. HOPEFULLY!

Bobby is going, Ryan is coming.

We couldn’t all fit in the tractor, we went down on Saturday so all of the kids were with me, but of course Justin couldn’t resist a ride!

Olives at Dinner

I taught Rett this fun trick at dinner tonight.

100_0467

I’m not really sure why??  Well because he looks cute with his little olive covered fingers.  All the other kids were so excited Rett couldn’t help but be excited too, that is until he tasted one.  He did NOT like them at all!  So funny!

He sure did like to play with them though.  Justin asked me why he didn’t like them.  I think it is just unfathomable in his mind, how can anyone not like olives??  Funny boys!

Working Kids

The kids are fun to watch doing their chores.  They always are trying to figure out the fastest best way to get them done.  Tonight Justin pulled the bottles down and the girls carried the grain buckets.  I like to see the team work!

Who am I kidding I just like to see any work!

Grape Juice

Grandma T, bought and delivered grapes to me this morning.  How do I say no to that!?  I told Ryan last night that I wanted to have a really productive day today, I guess I better be careful what I wish for!  Rett discovered the grapes right off.

Claire just loved the “berries”  she found all sorts of containers to put her precious pretty berries in.  They were pretty!

A Little Cheer(er)

The older girls on the cheer squad are just so excited to stunt with Ashley because she is so tiny.  Ashley on the other hand is pretty nervous about the whole thing.  She likes the idea of it, but shakes like a leaf when she is up.  They had a fun time at practice.  There was so much giggling going on, even I was laughing at these silly girls!

Ashley is like, hey this is kind of cool!

They kept having to stop and get the giggles out before they could lift her again.  (her coach is spotting her in back, I wasn’t too worried)

Sunday Shots

Ryan and the kids made it out in the yard to play baseball.  The girls wimped out after to long and just left the boys to play.

We had a nice normal Sunday.  The lessons were good at church, and we got to just stay home and be a family this afternoon.  I’ll take that!

Another Egg Post

We have got some serious egg laying going on here.  These eggs are like the size of ostrich eggs!  It is crazy.  We have double yolkers at least once a week!

100_0435

I have eggs coming out my ears, I even made a quiche last night.  I haven’t made one of those, well, ever, well back in Home Ec in high school I guess, but not since then.  I forgot that I like quiche.  The kids gobbled it up, I think we will be having it a lot more.  The only problem we are currently having is with our red chicken and her green egg.  She must have a secret hiding place because we haven’t been getting any of her pretty green eggs for a couple of days.  I will be glad for winter when we can trap them in, gathering will be a lot easier then.  Did you know chickens eggs are the same color as their ears?  I haven’t wanted to get close enough to one to check out that theory, but my friend who has a “chicken encyclopedia” told me it said that.  Hmmm chicken encyclopedia, maybe Ashley would like one of those for Christmas…….

Harvest Update

100_0434

We are just about to wrap up potato harvest.  We planned to finish yesterday, but we have been having major break downs causing hours of no digging.  So frustrating!  It seems like the equipment just gets as tired as the farmers!  We are also having a bumper crop as you can see, so it takes longer to roll through so many potatoes.  Ryan has been home one night this week, he is just to tired to drive, but thankfully he can stay at his Mom’s house and not have to get up early and drive down.

So with potatoes wrapping up that means sugar beets are getting in full swing.  Ryan keeps having to stay on with the potato crew though because of all the breakdowns.  Thankfully the Arco crew has finished digging potatoes so Bobby is in a beet digger.  It will go much faster once they are both going and have all of the trucks too.

We have been surviving really well, not lonely at all, until this week.  Harvest is great for about 6 weeks, much time after that just seems like torture!  Shannon watched the little kids yesterday so I could ride with Ryan, which was nice.  Hopefully we can spend some time riding around with him this weekend.  November 1st cant come quick enough!

Getting Kind of Spooky!

It looks like we need a trip to the dentist!
